It Was Never About the Food

One ordinary night at the kitchen counter. Your voice on the left. What's actually happening on the right.

Most eating that has nothing to do with hunger sounds completely reasonable from the inside. The story holds together. That's the problem. So let's slow one of these moments down to the minute, and watch the gap open up between what you're telling yourself and what your body is actually reporting.

You open the fridge. You're not sure why.

The door's open. Cold light. Nothing in there has changed.

Standing at the counter. Eating without tasting.

The pull has a shape now. It isn't in your stomach.

You set the packet down. The need is still real - it's just pointed at the right thing now.

You open the fridge. You're not sure why.

What's actually happening You ate two hours ago. Your body isn't asking for this.

Notice what the two bars did. The green one - actual hunger - barely moved all night. The orange one climbed and climbed. Same craving, two completely different drivers. The food was never tracking your stomach. It was tracking the size of the gap between the day you had and the day you needed.

You don't crave the food. You crave the state change. The food is just the nearest door to it - and the most expensive one.

This is why willpower at the counter almost never works. Willpower argues with the orange bar as if it were the green one. The move isn't to white-knuckle the craving. It's to name the state you're actually chasing - rest, completion, something that's yours - and find a door to it that doesn't cost you tomorrow morning.
