The Floor Has Been Raised, The Ceiling Will Be Untouched.

What is happening now with AI is that the floor has been raised. So with writing, before you had to be really bad, you had to feel how bad you were. The struggle was how you built your own taste, your voice, your distinctiveness. Now you can avoid that and you can be competent at writing just by using AI. You can pay £20 a month for a chatbot and become a competent writer.

The issue is that the issue isn’t that AI writes average prose, it’s that average prose is now good enough for most purposes for most people. Good enough to send, good enough to publish, good enough to never really try beyond that. So although the floor has risen in terms of the quality of content, the ceiling has stayed where it is and more people have decided to go nowhere near it and the distribution has collapsed towards the middle. The individuals who probably would have become exceptional or were very close anyway now have no friction forcing them to develop further and they actually fall towards the middle, which is where most people are going to reside.
