You Are The Slop

There’s a lot of noise online about people just creating ‘AI Slop’ and passing it off as content

With good reason - I for one absolutely hate reading generic shite from people online (Often ‘written’ by people who just can’t understand why their business isn’t doing well. Yep, it’s a mystery, isn’t it?)

But I read an article the other day that made a great point;

So much of the world was already slop

The bestselling self-help books that line the walls of airport and train station bookshops? Slop

The majority of health and fitness content pre-AI? Slop

Pretty much all of LinkedIn? SLOP

The world has shown us that it loves slop

It doesn’t matter if the slop is human or AI, if it’s accessed via subscription, membership or product

The world has been buying slop for some time, all AI has done is make the raw components of slop, much cheaper

The author recommended a simple ‘Byline Test’ for your content, to determine whether it was generic slop or not

If you were to remove the byline, IG handle or any other identifier from a piece of content?

And you couldn’t tell that it was you that made it, even if no AI was involved?

It’s slop - you are the slop

This is such a great (if not slightly brutal) frame for working on your positioning, angles and thoughts you’re sharing online

And in a world of slop?

It’s an important test for everyone who wants to stand out
