Should I Ask AI What To Focus On Today

Asking AI ‘What should I work on today?’

Is probably one of the stupidest questions you could ask it as a coach, and would highlight that you are completely lost when it comes to your work and what your business needs.

So why did I ask Claude this question this morning?

The key thing with AI use in any case - is what context you’ve given it to give you a reply that’s helpful.

In the ‘old days’ (I know), this meant changing prompts based on the model you were using, finding the right level of complexity to give it what you want, without prompts so long that AI forgot or ignored most of the key details.

But models have improved, and agentic AI tools now possess much greater context windows, plus better reasoning capabilities and access to a variety of tools.

The most important thing for coaches is that they have a bank of this context that is from them, is up to date, and is stored in a way that makes it very easy for the AI to read.

Asking AI what to prioritise is abdicating from your duty as a business owner - it’s treating AI like a mentor who happens to know nothing about you.

But there is a version of the same question that isn’t crazy, which is why I asked it this morning.

Claude has unbelievable context on me - it sees every task I have planned, every goal I’ve set, every project that’s live - my calendar, task manager, emails and anything else it needs to know me.

So when I ask it ‘What should I do today’ - I’m not asking for spiritual guidance, I’m asking it to fetch everything that was planned by ME, and presenting it to me.

From there, I can quickly check-in with myself and my goals (using AI to read them, not me spending ages going through all of my context) - and decide on priorities, schedule etc.

I do believe that AI is changing productivity - not just in a sense of ‘Oooh it saves me time doing this’ - I think it will fundamentally change what productivity advice actually looks like.

I don’t advocate for outsourcing thinking to AI - but I am a firm believer in getting it to find all of your thinking in just a few seconds, and bring you the key aspects to decide from.

AI is not the best mentor, but it’s an unbelievably good Chief of Staff.

I reckon in the next 2 years, everyone’s going to have one.
