What's Your Mission

Imagine I gave you a member of staff who could build, autonomously, for a year.

They’re not doing odd bits, helping with socials, replying to client messages.

A year of someone working on whatever you pointed them at, without ever needing you to check in.

What would you point them at?

I wouldn’t expect most coaches to have an answer (I’ll be honest and say I’m not sure I do)

I don’t think that’s because of a lack of ambition - but because it’s hard to think beyond the next post, the next client, the next launch.

When I’m mentoring coaches, I do always encourage them to think about their future - because yes you’re launching now, but what will this launch mean as part of the bigger picture for the business? For the future of the business? The ecosystem of offers already around it?

This particular thought came from Scott Wu on the David Senra podcast

He’s CEO of Cognition, the company behind Devin. Devin are aiming to build the world’s first software engineer.

He described AI use like a ladder

AI used to be able to do seconds of human work, so we’d give it a command. Now it’s able to do hours of human work, so we give it a task.

In the future it will be able to do months of human work - so it will need a mission

The uncomfortable truth for a lot of us is that it’s not clear that we have a mission worth handing over.

So we still benefit from AI for tasks, captions, call summaries, email tidying etc.

But eventually AI running for months will become commoditised and cheap, and the scarce thing left will be knowing what is worth doing.

And that is the one muscle a stuck business never trains.

You have spent years getting good at execution - posting, selling, delivering - which is absolutely great, but could become a commodity.

So as much as we should think long and hard about what we’re doing today, what we’re selling today, how we’re marketing today

I’d advise keeping an eye on knowing what you’re trying to build - because that’s the opportunity of the future
