What's The Voice Note In Your Coaching
People often like the convenience of voice noting
But hate the burden of being the recipient of a voice note.
(We all secretly despise that friend who sends a 14 minute podcast
Consisting of one paragraph of useful information, submerged in 9 minutes of ‘uhh’s and 2 minutes of telling the dog to shut up.)
Heineken used this brilliantly in their marketing in Brazil
They ran a campaign that promised that if a friend sent you a long voice note - Heineken would buy you a beer.
On the condition that you’d go and meet them in person to have the beer, instead.
The voice note is the convenient version of the conversation - It feels like catching up, plus it’s quicker and can be done whenever.
But it’s not what you actually want from a friend - which is to sit with them in the pub and have a pint.
When we think about coaching, clients do this all the time
They voice note instead of booking the call
They Whatsapp instead of doing their check-in.
They want a list of recipes for the week instead of doing the work you’ve given them.
Each one gets them a bit less of what they came to you for
There’s a time and place for saying yes to that shortcut, if a client genuinely needs it. And it doesn’t help to fight it, and sound too rigid about the ‘process’
But a third option is available - name the shortcut, and make the better version easier to say yes to.
What’s the voice note in your coaching?
And what’s your free beer?
